THE The South Carolina Department of Athletics and the Gamecock men’s basketball program will honor the 1971 ACC men’s basketball champion on Saturday at the break, celebrating the team’s 50th anniversary title. Due to the health and safety protocols of COVID-19, the celebration will be virtual this season, with a tribute video at the break, and next season, the championship cast will be personally honored at the annual Legends Weekend of the program, on a date to be determined in February 2022.

The Gamecocks will play three of their last five regular season competitions on the road, starting next Tuesday, when Carolina travels to face Tennessee number 16 in Knoxville. Tip time is set to 8:30 pm (Eastern Time) on the SEC Network.

SCOUTING THE REBELS
– The rebels are 11-8 overall and 6-6 in SEC disputes and have won three consecutive conference clashes by entering Saturday’s contest against Gamecocks. Coach Kermit Davis is in his third season at Oxford.

– After starting to play at the 1-4 conference, the rebels won five of their next seven disputes, including a victory over No. 10 Missouri in Oxford earlier this week.

– Three double-digit midpoints for the rebels, led by Devontae Shuler’s 15.5 points per game. Jarkel Joiner (11.2) and Romello White (10.8) are also in double digits. In conference competitions, Shuler has a team-high average of 15.4 points per game.

– The rebels are second in the SEC and 32nd nationally, with opponents with only 63.2 points per game. Ole Miss’s defense is also forcing 16.74 opponents’ turnovers per competition, which is third in the league and 20th nationally.

TO QUOTE
– “They had their moments when they hit and missed the attack and that’s when they had defeats. Most of the time they are playing very well, a very physical team that throws the ball on the post. Our post-defense has to be on time, because that ball is going into this game, very similar to what happened in the state of Mississippi. Our hands are busy, but we are confident when we play in a certain way and we are connected that we can win. We just have to focus on it, believe in it, stay on course and face any challenge that comes our way. “- Frank Martin on fighting the rebels
