Could the ban on gas stations in Petaluma, California, start a new trend?

All eyes are on Petaluma, California, a city of approximately 60,000 people who voted in February to ban the construction of new gas stations as part of the fight against climate change.

The Petaluma City Council voted unanimously to approve the ban, as the city aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030, The Press Democrat reported.

“The goal here is to abandon fossil fuels and make it as easy as possible,” said Councilman D’Lynda Fischer, according to The Press Democrat. “At the moment, we already have fossil fuel stations and what we want them to do is add chargers (for electric vehicles) and create another fuel source that people can use.”

Many residents of Petaluma supported the ban after a Safeway supermarket with a gas station was built near a school and residential neighborhoods, according to The Press Democrat. The gas station on Safeway will remain despite the ban.

A group called STAND.earth supported the movement to ban new gas stations as part of its Safe Cities initiative, reported Axios.

“Harmful practices in the fossil fuel industry and reckless expansion plans threaten the well-being of communities and people around the world. That’s why the SAFE Cities campaign is connecting local efforts to limit fossil fuels in one call global for action “, says the group’s website reads.

Petaluma still has 16 gas stations that are not going anywhere for now, according to The Press Democrat.

“At this point, with Safeway approved, I think it probably won’t mean that less gas will be sold in the city,” said council member Mike Healy, according to The Press Democrat. “I think we are really counting on people moving to electric and more fuel efficient vehicles in the future. I feel that (gas) is kind of a decline in the industry right now. “

Healy had already tried to ban new gas stations in 2014, according to The Press Democrat.
