Corporation Commission tells utilities to prioritize the power of homes over businesses

The Oklahoma Corporate Commission voted 2-1 on Tuesday night to approve an order asking utility and utility companies in Oklahoma to prioritize health and safety over companies when making energy diversion decisions.

“This is a terrible situation,” Public Services Director Brandy Wreath told the commissioners during the meeting.

Wreath told commissioners that some companies were asked by utilities to cut energy consumption and refused.

The order gives energy companies the ability to make decisions to divert energy. Wreath said this order is necessary to prevent possible loss of life.

An OG&E representative was on the call and supports the request.

Wreath said additional gas freezes could occur on Wednesday, and if there is not enough wind for wind generation, there may be another power shortage.

Commissioners Todd Hiett and Dana Murphy voted in favor of the order. Bob Anthony voted against and said he thinks there are unintended consequences and concerns about contractual issues.
