Coroner identifies man shot to death by Aiken county deputies

WARRENVILLE, SC (WRDW / WAGT) – Aiken County deputies killed a man who ran at them with a knife he brandished while threatening neighbors on Monday morning, officials said.

At around 1:17 am, MPs responded to 115 Joes Park Road in Warrenville for reports of a man armed with a knife who made several attempts to attack nearby residents, officials said.

When the police arrived, they spotted the suspect, who ran towards them brandishing his weapon, officials said.

Police officers shot the man and then assisted him until emergency medical teams from Aiken County arrived, then declaring him dead.

Aiken County coroner Darryl Ables identified the deceased as Daryl Dye of 45-year-old Joes Park Road.

There were no reports of injuries from caravan park residents or deputies.

Sheriff Michael Hunt asked the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division to conduct an investigation into the shooting.

SLED’s goal is to conduct an independent and complete criminal investigation as timely as possible in the circumstances, said agency spokesman Tommy Crosby.

SLED investigators will conduct interviews with all potential witnesses, collect all relevant evidence and conduct forensic testing as needed. The information collected will be summarized in a report from the case file to be submitted to prosecutors.

The Aiken County incident was the third police shooting in South Carolina in 2021. In 2020, there were 49 police shooting in South Carolina; two involved the Aiken county sheriff’s office.
