Coronavirus pandemic: Los Angeles County sees an increase in MIS-C cases, despite the decline in hospitalizations for COVID

LOS ANGELES (KABC) – Amid a decline in hospitalizations for coronavirus in Los Angeles County, health officials are turning their attention to how COVID-19 is affecting children.

As schools approach reopening for face-to-face classes, there are now 100 cases of multisystemic inflammatory syndrome, a serious disease linked to the coronavirus.

That figure marks a 77% increase in MIS-C cases last month. Officials suspect it is related to a sudden spike in holiday activity.

Los Angeles unified school district superintendent Austin Beutner said the campuses could reopen on April 9, depending on the availability of the vaccine.

As of Monday, California will allocate about 10% of the first doses of COVID-19 vaccines to teachers and support staff, officials said.
