Coronavirus New Jersey: Mom dies of COVID a few days after giving birth to her third child

PATERSON, NJ – On one of the most difficult days of their lives, Joanna Jimenez’s family talked about their last happy date – their baby shower.

Baby Ashton was born on February 13 – it was an emergency delivery because Jimenez was fighting COVID. Her mother lost the battle, never having a chance to hold the baby she was carrying with care for almost nine months in her arms.

Jimenez leaves behind his three children – Jordan, 15, Christian, 18 months, baby Ashton. She also leaves behind her devastated husband, Chad Augustus.

“I’m just trying to stay strong … every day I want to let my emotions out, but I’m trying to be strong for the children and the family,” said Augusto.

The family created a GoFundMe page to help their three children start their lives, without the mother that family and friends call “the glue of the meeting”.

“I had many experiences and memories with her – she was always by my side,” said best friend Cynthia Sanchez.

“I am very proud of her for the woman she became after she had children – she dedicated her life to making sure her children were good,” said her brother, John Jimenez.

Love still flows in the family – they all decided to let Jimenez’s heartbroken mother, Ashton’s grandmother, take the initiative to look after him. It is said that it alleviates his sadness at losing his daughter.

“So now we just have to celebrate her life every day,” said her sister, Jacqueline Diaz.
