Coronavirus in Oregon: State reports 221 new cases as vaccine implantation problems continue

The Oregon Health Authority announced 211 new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday and no new deaths.

This is well below the daily average reported for the past seven days, although delays in reporting tend to result in lower case counts on weekends. Cases have shown a downward trend across the state since mid-January.

The new numbers come as the vaccination effort continues and problems abound for Oregon senior citizens trying to get the coveted hours to be vaccinated against the coronavirus.

Formal and informal volunteers across the state are helping to enroll senior citizens who struggle to browse unknown and often problematic sites or those who do not have access to the Internet.

A new lottery-based vaccine waiting list system designed to reduce the stress of signing up for an appointment has been hampered by uncertainty, poor communication and crowded hotlines.

At the Portland International Airport mass vaccination site, people reported waiting hours of several hours on Saturday night to get the vaccine, with some rescheduling their appointments for 8 am Sunday morning.

Connie Amos, leader of the vaccination site, said Saturday was their biggest day at the PDX, with 5,800 vaccination appointments, although that may be too much to handle, she said.
