Coronavirus in Oregon: State reports 1,643 new cases, 28 new deaths

The Oregon Health Authority announced on Saturday 1,643 new confirmed or suspected cases of coronavirus, as well as 28 new deaths, bringing the total number of deaths to at least 1,603 during the pandemic.

The vast majority of people killed were in their 80s or 90s – and one person was 100 years old. Three people in their 70s died and one person in their 60s succumbed to complications from COVID-19, according to the state.

State health officials also reported that 8,768 doses of vaccine were administered to Oregon residents on Friday, and another 4,680 were administered in previous days, but were added to the state’s database on Friday. These numbers mean that Oregon has so far managed 34% of its current vaccine stock, up 5% from earlier this week.

On Friday, Governor Kate Brown announced she had commissioned the National Guard to assist with Salem Health’s vaccine campaign – a move that should help the state achieve its goal of administering 12,000 doses of vaccine a day.

Oregon is one of many states that struggle to administer vaccines as quickly as residents want due to a combination of factors, including a reliance on hospital systems to deliver doses, a lack of trained individuals to administer vaccines and dependence on one. layered approach that appears to inoculate hundreds of thousands of health professionals before the rest of the state’s population.

The state expects to reach its goal of 12,000 vaccines a day by the end of next week.

December was the deadliest month of the pandemic so far, with at least 472 deaths, which is almost as much as the first six months of the pandemic combined.
