Coronavirus in Oregon: State reports 1,346 new cases, 41 deaths

The Oregon Health Authority reported on Wednesday 1,346 new confirmed or suspected cases of coronavirus and 41 more deaths.

The numbers represent the second consecutive day of more than 40 new fatality announcements, although the state said on Tuesday that the long process of confirming some deaths delayed some announcements. More than 30 of the deaths announced on Tuesday occurred in 2020.

The state did not provide details of the deaths announced on Wednesday, but said more information would be released later in the day.

Oregon’s death count through Tuesday raised COVID-19 deaths in December to 513, exceeding the deaths in March, April, May, June, July and August combined.

Meanwhile, another 9,071 doses of the coronavirus vaccine were administered on Tuesday, marking the third highest daily total since inoculations began in the state. As of Wednesday, nearly 130,000 first and second doses were delivered, about 40% of the 321,225 doses delivered to Oregon.

Where the new cases are by municipality: Baker (16), Benton (29), Clackamas (105), Clatsop (10), Columbia (13), Coos (9), Crook (19), Deschutes (89), Douglas (25), Gilliam (1), Grant (8), Harney (2), Hood river (6), Jackson (58), Jefferson (23), Josephine (64), Klamath (32), Lake (2), Lane (98), Lincoln (3) , Linn (50), Malheur (24), Marion (97), Morrow (9), Multnomah (307), Polk (28), Tillamook (11), Umatilla (52), Union (7), Wasco (13) , Washington (110) and Yamhill (26).

New deaths: The state did not provide information on any of the new deaths, but said it would do so later on Wednesday.

The prevalence of infections: On Wednesday, the state reported 1,168 new positive tests out of 17,886 tests performed, which is equivalent to a positivity rate of 6.5%.

Who was infected: New confirmed or suspected infections increased among the following age groups: 0-9 (72); 10-19 (160); 20-29 (254); 30-39 (233); 40-49 (197); 50-59 (158); 60-69 (129); 70-79 (78); 80 and older (46).

Who is in the hospital: The state reported that 434 Oregon residents with confirmed coronavirus infections were currently in the hospital on Wednesday, 31 more than on Tuesday. Of these, 103 patients with coronavirus were in intensive care units, 10 more than on Tuesday.

Vaccines administered: Oregon administered 129,782 doses of 321,225 received, just over 40% of its supply.

Since it started: Oregon reported 129,109 confirmed or suspected infections and 1,708 deaths, among the lowest totals in the country. To date, the state has reported 2,874,572 test lab reports.
