Coronavirus hospitalizations reached their lowest level in almost three months

More than 74,000 people remain in the hospital due to COVID-19 until Thursday, the lowest level in almost three months, according to data from the the COVID Tracking Project.

The group recorded approximately 74,225 hospitalizations through Thursday, making it the third consecutive day that the number remained below 80,000.

The number of patients in intensive care units – 15,190 – is the lowest number registered by the group since November 17, 2020.

The new data marks a promising development starting in January, which saw the best COVID-19 fatalities and the highest average number of hospitalizations for coronavirus in any month since the pandemic hit the United States

According data compiled by Johns Hopkins University, the US had more than 103,000 new coronavirus infections on Thursday, bringing the country’s total to approximately 27.4 million.

The United States also had 3,724 additional coronavirus-related deaths reported on Thursday, with the total number of deaths now over 475,000.

Despite the improvement in numbers, the authorities have warned the public and governors not to slow down, as there has been an increase in cases of new contagious variants of the coronavirus across the country.

The decline in hospitalizations came on the same day that President Biden announced that the US secured 200 million additional doses of the coronavirus vaccine, ending a commitment promised last month.

Biden, during comments at the National Institutes of Health, said the purchases would increase the offer by 50 percent to 600 million doses.

The president added that the new purchases mean that there will be enough doses of Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech to vaccinate all Americans by the end of July.

As of Thursday, about 34.7 million people have received at least one dose of the coronavirus vaccine, with about 11.2 million inoculated with the two necessary doses, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
