The 2021 MLB All-Star Game is scheduled to take place at Coors Field, home to the Colorado Rockies, reports ESPN Buster Olney. The game is scheduled for July 13.
The MLB recently opted to withdraw the festivities from Truist Park in Atlanta as a gesture of protest against the recent passing of voting laws in Georgia. These laws are widely considered to be very restrictive and particularly onerous for black voters. Coors Field already hosted the All-Star Game in 1998.
In announcing the decision, the MLB commissioner issued the following statement:
“During the past week, we have had thoughtful conversations with clubs, past and current players, the Players Association and The Players Alliance, among others, to hear their opinions. I decided that the best way to demonstrate our values is a sport is to relocate All- Star Game and this year’s MLB Draft.
“The Major League Baseball fundamentally supports the right to vote for all Americans and opposes voting restrictions. In 2020, the MLB became the first professional sports league to join the non-partisan Civic Alliance to help build a future where everyone participates in the formation of the United States We are proud to use our platform to encourage baseball fans and communities across the country to fulfill their civic duties and to actively participate in the voting process. the unshakable support of our game.
“We will continue with our plans to celebrate the memory of Hank Aaron during this season’s All-Star festivities. In addition, MLB’s planned investments to support local communities in Atlanta as part of our Legacy All-Star Projects will move forward. Shortly thereafter, Braves also issued a statement expressing disagreement with the MLB decision:
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp, who signed the bill, also denounced the league’s decision to take the game out of Truist Park.
The MLB Draft had also been scheduled to take place in Atlanta during the same period. Presumably, that event will also be relocated to Denver.
