FIGHTING ISLAND – Conor McGregor was punished with a six-month medical suspension from combat after he was brutally knocked out on Saturday.
McGregor was won at UFC 257, played at Etihad Arena, on Ilha da Luta, in Abu Dhabi, knocked out by the American Dustin Poirier.
Poirier bombarded the Irishman against the fence, knocked him to the ground and left him bloody on the screen in the second round.
The catalyst for McGregor’s downfall was a relentless kick to the calf that left him unable to walk properly.
The former UFC weight-two champion hobbled out of the arena and had crutches nearby when he appeared at the post-event press conference in which Insider attended.
Mixed Martial Arts, the official MMA record holder, sent Insider a statement on Monday detailing the medical suspensions for athletes competing at UFC 257 – the final event of the UFC’s two-week residency in the UAE.
Medical suspensions for recently competed fighters are common in the industry, regardless of whether they have won or lost. They are designed to allow fighters to adequately recover from their struggles.
Poirier was sentenced to seven days of mandatory rest, for example, while McGregor was told he cannot compete for 180 days unless he receives authorization from a doctor about his tibia and right fibula, pending an X-ray.
McGregor called the loss “painful”, but said he would be comforted by Irish coffee, pancakes for breakfast and spending time with his family on a $ 4 million yacht.
Other medical suspensions selected from UFC 257 include seven days of mandatory rest for UFC debutant Michael Chandler, who destroyed Dan Hooker in the first round with strikes.
Hooker, however, is prohibited from competing for 45 days and must not train for 30 days.
