Commentary by Serena Williams made by the presenter of a sports radio leads to her resignation

A sports radio host from Buffalo, NY, was fired on Wednesday for commenting on Serena Williams and other black celebrities when talking about women he found attractive.

Rob Lederman, now a former Morning Bull presenter at 97 Rock Buffalo, joined the conversation while speaking to ESPN Buffalo Bills reporter Marcel Louis-Jacques. The conversation was about the level of the toaster that everyone on the program put on for the morning toast.

“I have them to attract women that I find attractive,” said Lederman. “I will never go to a Serena Williams level. But I am very comfortable with a Halle Berry level.”

Louis-Jacques tweeted the clip and a wave of comments from Lederman followed.

“There is already an unfortunate and undeserved stigma attached to dark skin – so for Rob to take something undesirable like burnt toast and compare it to anyone’s skin color is reprehensible and feeds that stigma,” the reporter tweeted.

Lederman was subsequently fired from the radio station and lost his job as an arena presenter for the lacrosse teams Buffalo Sabers and Buffalo Bandits. The University of Buffalo added that Lederman would not be brought back to be his public speaker.

Lederman told The Buffalo News that he heard his words again and was “horrified”.

“I could easily see how someone could be offended by this. I understand,” he said. “It looks terrible, and it is terrible.”
