Klain said a $ 20 billion effort to combat COVID-19 in the United States, revealed by the president-elect on Friday, would put the United States on the right track to recover from the coronavirus pandemic.
He said the new Biden administration planned to take steps to increase production and distribution of the two COVID-19 vaccines approved for emergency use in the United States.
“We think there are things we can do to speed up the delivery of this vaccine and make the vaccine supply go further,” said Klain. “For example, one thing the president-elect mentioned yesterday was using the Defense Production Act to increase the production of a specific type of syringe that allows us to get six doses of the vaccine from one vial instead of five.”
Klain added that despite concerns about the depletion of the federal government’s vaccine supply, Biden’s team currently believes the United States is on track to achieve “100 million vaccines in 100 days” after Biden’s inauguration.
Biden labeled the Trump administration’s vaccine launch as a “grim failure” in a speech on Thursday and promised to focus on improving the vaccine’s distribution infrastructure in the U.S., as well as combating skepticism about the vaccine in some communities.
“The launch of the vaccine in the United States has been a terrible failure so far,” said Biden on Thursday. “This will be one of the most challenging operational efforts we have ever undertaken as a nation. We will have to move heaven and earth to vaccinate more people. “
