Craig Brewer emphasized that the country has changed a lot since the original 1988 film, and this needed to be taken into account when making the new film.
Coming to America fans looking forward to a sequel to the classic Eddie Murphy-Arsenio Hall may have been surprised to learn that the 33-year-old comedy in production would be rated PG-13. The original was rated R.
However, director Craig Brewer told the Wall Street Journal in an interview published on Wednesday that Amazon Prime Video’s Coming 2 America it will have as much bite as the original – but not the nudity and speckled F bombs.
“If a film for minors worked, then we would make a film for minors,” said Brewer WSJ. “I think we still have a really hilarious movie and we’ve gone beyond the limits of a PG-13 movie here and there. If you look at the first movie, in addition to the bathers’ free nudity and some bad words, it’s actually quite healthy. It has a touch fairy tale. “
Murphy and Hall, along with much of the original cast, return to Coming 2 America. And Brewer said he knew expectations would be high among fans, as the film is a beloved classic by Murphy, as Beverly Hills Police Officer, 48 hours and Commercial places.
“I know what it’s like to have people say ‘I can’t wait to see’ and then threaten me and say, ‘You better not mess it up because this movie means a lot to me,'” said the director. “My job on the set was to be the guardian of what the original film can be celebrated for, and so what is exaggerating, because we wanted this film to be its own.”
Brewer also pointed out that the country has changed a lot since the original 1988 film, and this needed to be taken into account when making the sequel.
“We didn’t want to ignore the fact that Prince Akeem in the first film left the wife he was promised to by means of his king jumping and barking like a dog. I can guarantee that he would not go through the third draft of a script that would come through the Hollywood system. today, “he said. “There was always this line that we had to judge how far we would go with the comedy.”
He added: “We found out when we started testing it with fans of the original, we were testing it when there were protests from Black Lives Matter on the streets, the conscience of the country was starting to change, and then we asked, ‘How can we still be relevant to this film, be funny, but at the same time be sensitive to racial and gender issues? ‘”
Coming 2 America is scheduled to be digitally released on Friday on Amazon Prime Video.
