The CCI writes: “Although we are excited about the vaccine launch and the growing number of individuals being inoculated, it seems that July will still be too early to safely hold a face-to-face event of the magnitude of Comic-Con. For that reason, we made the decision challenging to postpone Comic-Con 2021 as a personal meeting until our 2022 dates and, once again, hold this year’s celebration as the free online Comic-Con @ Home. Unfortunately, last year’s challenges and the many postponements of our two biggest events left us with limited financial resources, so this year the online experience will be reduced to a three-day event, from 23 to 25 July 2021.
CCI also clarifies that participants who rolled their badges from 2020 to 2021 will have their badges rolled back to 2022. Those who prefer a refund can submit an order through the Comic-Con website.
As the ICC notes in its statement, this cancellation reflects the fact that the entertainment industry is still struggling to return to normal in 2021, even as the COVID-19 vaccine is becoming more prevalent. Several upcoming films have seen more pandemic-related delays this year, while Paramount is the latest studio to begin pursuing a more aggressive theatrical / streaming release strategy. However, as of mid-February, Disney has no plans to launch the long-delayed Black Widow on Disney +.
