Over there there was no face-to-face Comic-Con in 2020, and neither will there be in 2021 after the show’s organizers announce the decision to “postpone” until 2022.

This is … a strange use of the word, since Comic-Con in 2022 would simply be Comic-Con in 2022, but perhaps there are legal disputes involved in the exact language used in terms of insurance, etc.

Here are the most important parts of the organizer’s statement:

It is the organization’s policy to continue to closely monitor information from local and national health officials regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. We could never have imagined what the world experienced in 2020 and continues to experience today. Although we are excited about the vaccine launch and the growing number of individuals being inoculated, it seems that July will still be too early to safely hold a face-to-face event of the magnitude of Comic-Con. For that reason, we made the challenging decision to postpone Comic-Con 2021 as a personal meeting until our 2022 dates.

In place of a face-to-face event, there will be a Comic-Con @ Home event taking place at the same time. And in more promising news, while the the main Comic-Con was pushed to 2022, there is room for a smaller show to be held as a kind of test:

… we believe that launching a minor face-to-face event at a later time can be a safe alternative. For this reason, we are pleased to announce that the San Diego Comic Convention is planning to host a three-day face-to-face convention in San Diego in November.

A series of 2021 programs have already been canceled, including Katsucon.
