Colorado Congressman Calls for Federal Action on Weapons Law After Mass Shooting in Boulder

“There are common sense laws and laws that we can pass that will help make our communities safer. We just have to make them. It’s that simple,” the Colorado Democrat told John Berman of CNN on “New Day.”

Ten people, including a police officer, were killed after an armed man opened fire at a supermarket in Boulder, Colorado. The latest attack – one of at least six mass shootings so far this year – has shaken a community and spurred congressional calls for action.

Earlier this month, the House passed HR 8 which would expand background checks on all commercial arms sales and HR 1146 to try to close what is known as the “Charleston Rift”, which allows some firearms to be transferred by licensed arms dealers before the required background checks are completed.
Crow told CNN that it is now up to the Senate to act on the two bills. Senate Democrats pledged to bring the background check bill to the floor, despite the steep rise ahead to garner the 60 votes needed to bring in a potential obstruction.

Asked by Berman whether it would be worth getting rid of the Senate obstruction to pass the legislation, Crow replied, “Yes.”

“No one can say that a law or policy will prevent a specific shooting. I have never heard anyone say that passing common sense armed violence prevention legislation will prevent all shootings and make us perfectly safe. This is not true,” he said. Crow to CNN. “But it will make us much safer. When we have almost 40,000 Americans dying each year from armed violence, there is a lot of room for improvement.”

Crow added that, as a legislator, his job “is to try to make better policies, to make people’s lives better, to help make people safe. And they deserve my action.”

The suspect in the Boulder shooting is in custody, but the authorities have not released any information about his identity, the type of weapon used or any possible reason. The fatal shooting on Monday in Colorado also occurred less than a week after shooting attacks at three spas in the Atlanta area that left eight dead.
