Colorado boy, 14, accused of murdering Denver’s mother in a car shooting attack: authorities

A Colorado teenager was one of two people arrested in the fatal shooting of a Denver mom who was returning from dinner with friends over the weekend when she was hit in the head, according to authorities and reports.

The 14-year-old boy, who was not identified because of his young age, and an 18-year-old named Neshan Johnson were charged with connection with the murder of 32-year-old Pamela Cabriales on Saturday night in the Avenida area. Colfax and Interstate 25 in Denver, prosecutor Beth McCann announced on Monday.

According to a press release from the prosecutor’s office, Cabriales was sitting in his car on Saturday night when the 14-year-old allegedly opened fire, shooting him in the head.

A statement of probable cause from the Denver Police Department described how police officers responded at approximately 10:45 pm to a report of a shootout on the west lanes. They arrived to find a woman, later identified as Cabriales, injured inside a 2008 Land Rover SUV, which was riddled with damage to at least eight bullets in the windshield, according to the statement.

She was alone in the car at the moment. Cabriales was rushed to a hospital in the area, but could not be saved.

A friend told local news station FOX31 Denver that she and Cabrieles had gone out to dinner together that night, and she was coming home when she was shot.

The teenager was with Johnson, who was driving a dark Honda Accord at the time of the shooting, officials said. A witness told police that the sniper, later identified by investigators as the 14-year-old, left the passenger side of Cabriales’ vehicle and opened fire, firing six shots, the witness said.

The pair fled in the dark-colored sedan, which was later spotted shortly after midnight on Sunday, the report said.

The policeman who saw the car recognized him from a previous incident in a McDonald’s area, where someone fired three shots at the busy restaurant, according to the probable testimony. After locating the Honda sedan, a police chase ensued, the prosecutor’s office said in a press release. Johnson ended up colliding with the car, at which point he and two young men, including the alleged sniper, were captured and handcuffed.

The teenager was accused of first-degree murder, criminal attempt to commit first-degree murder with extreme indifference, criminal attempt to commit first-degree aggression with extreme indifference and for being an aggravated young offender, officials said.

A spokesman for McCann’s office confirmed that authorities are trying to try him as an adult. Meanwhile, Johnson was hit by similar charges.

It was not clear whether there was any reason for the shooting.

A GoFundMe page was created to benefit Cabriales’ 6-year-old son. The page describes how Cabriales “impacted the lives of so many people with his smile, love and acts of kindness.”

Since Cabriales’ death, his brother Alex Cabriales has asked McCann “to ensure that these two individuals are never free one day in their lives and do not kill anyone else,” he told FOX31.

Alex also referred to what he described as the 14-year-old’s “long criminal history”, which sources confirmed to the news station.

“It’s the criminal history of a 20-year-old criminal,” continued Alex. “You know, he is 14 years old. No way should this minor have left … Now, because of the courts not doing his job, my sister had to lose her life.”

“We don’t want this to happen to anyone again,” Alex told FOX31. “It’s hell on earth.”
