The Telegram messaging app marked a sudden increase in downloads after rival WhatsApp announced that it will allow Facebook Inc and its subsidiaries to collect user data, including their phone number and location.

Telegram obtained almost 2.2 million downloads, according to data analytics company Sensor Tower, and 100,000 users installed a similar application Signal.

In response to increasing requests, COLlive.com, the main news service for the Chabad community based in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, has opened an account on Telegram Messenger, where it will post alerts of important news and stories of the day.

The new service will be run by the COLlive social media team that manages the popular social media pages:

“We saw a huge growth in our direct readers on our website last year,” he said Mica Soffer, COLlive.com publisher. “We also want to continue to connect with our many followers who are on social media specifically.”
