College basketball comparison: South Carolina overtakes Dawgs to stop skidding in 6 games; Clemson wins 5th in a row | sports

ATHENS, Georgia – Jermaine Cousinard set the season’s record with 23 points and South Carolina broke a six-game losing streak with a 91-70 victory over Georgia on Saturday.

Cousinard averaged 9.3 points per game, but hit 8 out of 16 shots, including 4 out of 8 from the arc, leading the Gamecocks (6-12, 4-10 Southeastern Conference) for a season sweep in Georgia (14- 10, 7-10), that they also defeated 83-59 on 17 January. Gamecocks defeated Bulldogs 10 times in a row.

Keyshawn Bryant scored 17 points, Trae Hannibal 15 points and AJ Lawson 11. Hannibal and Lawson had four steals each with Gamecocks making 15 steals. South Carolina soared 54 percent, including 10 of 23 from the arc, to reach its highest point this season.

PJ Horne scored 17 points, including four out of 3 points, Justin Kier added 16 and Toumani Camara and Andrew Garcia 10 each for Georgia.

The Gamecocks led the entire second half with a 12-2 run, giving them a 19-point lead eight minutes from time. The lead reached 25 points at the end of the game.

South Carolina lost for a brief period in the middle of the first half, before a series of 13-0 put them in front forever. Gamecocks led in the 41-29 range.

Clemson 66, Miami 58

CLEMSON – Aamir Simms and Al-Amir Dawes each scored 19 points and Clemson defeated Miami short-handed for the fifth consecutive victory.

Clemson took the game’s first double-digit lead during a 6-0 run to make 57-44 with 9:17 to the end. Miami scored the next 10 points and got three points at 5:16, but the Hurricanes only made one more field goal the rest of the way.

Dawes made all four attempts at 3 points, and Simms and Hunter Tyson added three each, while Clemson hit 11 of 22 away and hit 49 percent overall.

Tyson finished with 10 points and six rebounds for Clemson (15-5, 9-5 ACC). Coach Brad Brownell took victory No. 200 at Clemson.

Isaiah Wong led Miami (7-15, 3-15), which had only six stock market players, with 28 points out of 10 out of 18 shots. Wong scored more than 20 for the ninth time this season. Anthony Walker had 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Elijah Olaniyi added eight points and nine rebounds.

Miami announced that Harlond Beverly (back) and Chris Lykes (left ankle) were dropped by the end of the season.

Clemson is expected to play for Syracuse on Wednesday and host Pittsburgh on Saturday to conclude his regular season.

Wofford 74, Furman 73

SPARTANBURG – Morgan Safford scored 12 points and his layup with six seconds left sent Wofford behind Furman.

Safford took the ball in the left wing and won the defense on the track to a float that bounced off the iron back before he hit the ball forward.

The Paladins inbound the ball and pushed for Noah Gurley, but his left-wing 3-point tilt with two seconds remaining pulled the iron and bounced off the pitch to finish it off.

Messiah Jones scored 19 points from 9 of 11 shots with seven rebounds for the Terriers (15-8, 12-5 Southern Conference). Storm Murphy added 15 points and Tray Hollowell 13.

Gurley tied a career record with 29 points and had seven rebounds for the Paladins (16-8, 10-5), whose four-game winning streak ended. Mike Bothwell and Clay Mounce scored 12 points and combined 13 rebounds.

Wofford also beat Furman 75-67 on 6 February.

Coastal Carolina 76, Troy 71

TROY, Ala. – DeVante ‘Jones scored 23 points in Coastal Carolina’s victory over Troy.

Essam Mostafa added 13 points and 11 rebounds. Kevin Williamson and Deanthony Tipler also scored 13 points each for Coastal Carolina (15-6, 9-5 Sun Belt Conference). Garrick Green added 11 points.

Nick Stampley set his career record with 24 points and had nine rebounds for the Trojans (10-16, 4-12), whose losing streak spanned seven games. Duke Miles had 19 points and eight assists. Zay Williams had 11 points and Khalyl Waters 10.

The Chanticleers have been unbeaten for four games against the Trojans this season.

High Point 65, USC Upstate 60

HIGH POINT, NC – John-Michael Wright had 24 points and 10 rebounds in High Point’s victory over South Carolina at the Big South Conference.

High Point (9-14) advances to play champion Winthrop on Monday.

Lydell Elmore had 15 points and eight rebounds for High Point. Emmanuel Izunabor added 11 rebounds and three blocks.

Nevin Zink had 20 points and 10 rebounds for the Spartans (5-18). Everette Hammond scored 17 points and Bryson Mozone scored 11.

The Panthers improved to 2-1 against the Spartans this season. In the most recent confrontation, South Carolina Upstate defeated High Point 60-51 on December 31.
