Cody Allen, all-time leader of the Cleveland Indians’ defense, retires

Cody Allen, a career leader in defenses and relief appearances for the Cleveland Indians, retired, the team said on Wednesday.

Allen, who signed a minor league contract with the Texas Rangers before the 2020 season, did not play during the shortened season for the pandemic.

Chosen in 2010, Allen is the leader of Cleveland’s career as a reliever in defenses (149) and appearances (456) over seven seasons. He also had 564 eliminations. The 32-year-old right-hand made at least 30 saves in three consecutive seasons with the Indians from 2015 to 17, including 32 in 2016, when he helped the Indians win the AL streamer and reach World Series game 7.

After acquiring All-Star Brad Hand in an exchange, the Indians chose not to sign Allen again after the 2018 season. Allen had 0-2 with four saves and an ERA of 6.26 in 25 games for the Los Angeles Angels in 2019. .

Allen had a 24-31 record with 3.14 ERA and 153 saves in 481 games. He also made seven saves in the postseason.
