Coast Guard in search of 16 missing persons off Florida coast

The first search began after a man was rescued from the water by a good Samaritan on Friday, two days after his boat capsized. The man was found about 23 miles off the coast of Fort Pierce, according to the USCG Southeast.

The Coast Guard responded and took the man, a Jamaican citizen, to a hospital.

The man told the Coast Guard that he and six other people were on a boat that capsized on Wednesday. The boat left Bimini, Bahamas.

The second search involves a “makeshift 6-foot ship” that disappeared off the coast of Key West, the Coast Guard said. The ship left Havana, Cuba, Friday, with 10 people on board.

A USCG spokesman told CNN that it is not clear why the ship disappeared.

The Coast Guard sent search planes and several boats to search for survivors.
