Co-Op City blackout: energy returning slowly after the second outage in 3 days in the Bronx buildings

CO-OP CITY, The Bronx (WABC) – The lights are slowly turning after about 10 buildings in the Bronx went dark again on Sunday morning.

The news comes less than 24 hours after Co-Op City rewired Friday’s deadly blackout.

The police have been touring the buildings doing welfare checks, as many woke up in cold apartments.

The previous outage occurred in the same cluster of buildings on Friday due to a fire in the transformer.

On Sunday morning, around 2 am, residents began to report that their buildings were in darkness and the light was out again.

Emergency services removed at least one person with an oxygen tank, while water stations were installed outside.

The authorities said it was not clear what the problem was.

Con Edison released a statement about the incident.

“Co-op City is unique in New York City as it generates its own energy and distributes it to its residents. Con Edison keeps feeders running for Co-op City that can be used as backup energy, but I can confirm that these feeders remain in service. “

On Sunday afternoon, a backup generator was installed and connected to one of the buildings.

Riverbay Corporation manages the large complex and considers the incident to be a fluke.

They had few responses when asked why backup generators were not yet installed.

“It sounds simple when you ask the question, but the technology and cost of installing these generators is quite difficult,” said Bob Klehammer of Riverbay.

Ada Longmore, 73, who lived in a unit on the 19th floor, died during the blackout on Friday.

His body was found on a staircase between the 18th and 19th floors.

She had an oxygen tank, which was empty, and she went up the stairs to get to her apartment, as the elevator had no power.

Local authorities are calling for changes, they say Co-Op City has been plagued by problems, including crumbling infrastructure.

“When energy and electricity run out, these people are vulnerable and it seems to be what happened to Ada Longmore,” said Rep. Jamaal Bowman.

The crews are in the process of verifying the following addresses that have reported being out of power:
