James Clyburn (SC), the Democratic in third place in the House, told Fox News on Tuesday.
Clyburn, whose Biden endorsement in South Carolina helped catapult him to victory in the state primaries, said that Democrats and Biden are simply busy with the COVID-19 package and that voters did not elect the president and a House and Democratic Senate to satisfy the media.
The comments come amid some complaints that Biden has yet to give a full press conference. The White House said Biden will do so before the end of the month.
“There is no reluctance on the part of this president to interact with the press,” said Clyburn after Fox News anchor and managing editor Neil Cavuto said he was curious “about why [Biden] is not doing major press conferences. “
“They why isn’t he?” Cavuto replied.
“Simply because we are busy doing other things now,” said Clyburn. “We are not just here to satisfy the media. We are here to satisfy the American people.”
Clyburn then noted that the House will pass Biden’s $ 1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief bill on Wednesday.
“We managed to sign this project – done tomorrow, signed this week and he has already told you that he will be there among the American people selling this project,” he said.
Bidden responded to ad hoc questions from reporters at the end of the events or while walking towards Marine One, but has not held an individual question and answer session with the media since taking office.
After looking at the past 100 years, CNN recently found that each of the 15 presidents prior to Biden gave a press conference 33 days after taking office.
Biden is under increasing pressure for not maintaining this tradition. The Washington Post has published at least two opinion articles asking Biden to press, and the issue is frequently raised by reporters at the White House’s daily press conference.
