CLEMSON, SC – Defensive intensity underscored Clemson’s victory in his home debut on Wednesday. Passing the South Carolina Bulldogs at Littlejohn Coliseum, the Tigers never lost in the competition and won a comfortable 75-38 victory.
Keeping the state of South Carolina (0-3) with 29.1 percent of shots, including a 1 to 14 out of 3-point attempts, Clemson (3-0) appeared on defense. The Tigers forced 24 spins and converted those spins into 25 points. Clemson kicked 46.6 percent off the ground and hit eight points out of 3. The Tigers also made 13 to 17 in free throws and won the rebound battle by 38 to 33. At the top of 36 bench points and 36 points in the paint, Clemson has accumulated 17 assists and 10 steals.
Hunter Tyson made the most of his 17 minutes on the court, taking all the top scorers with 13 points and six rebounds leading the team. Freshman Olivier-Maxence Prosper made his introduction to Littlejohn memorable by scoring 11 points and dropping five bags. Aamir Simms scored eight points out of 4 out of 5 shots and recorded four assists and four rebounds. Al-Amir Dawes supplemented his five points with four assists and three steals. Fourteen different players entered the game for the Tigers, and 12 of them put their names in the score column. Sebastian Guitian led the state of South Carolina with 10 points and six hits.
Clemson jumped to an 8-2 lead, which was crowned by Prospero by sinking a tray for his first points like a Tiger. Soon after, Simms posterized a defender with an emphatic dunk. Tyson put the Tigers ahead 16-6 through a three-pointer in the corner and went on to place Clemson 20-10 through a dunk. The impressive sinking was the result of Clemson’s winning performance, including a breakaway slam taken down by Clyde Trapp after the veteran guard stole an entry pass.
Trapp’s aforementioned rim-rocker, which followed a Trapp 3-point basket in possession of Clemson earlier, increased the Tigers’ lead to 15 points with 7:12 to play in the first half. Clemson went on to lead 36-18 at halftime, and the Tigers produced an 18-8 streak during the first 7:02 of the second half, on their way out of the Bulldogs. Tyson entered the dunking action at the start of the second half, directing the baseline and throwing it down. Parker Fox put the finishing touches on his unbalanced trey with a trey in the final minute, resulting in the final score of 75-38.
After a weeklong layoff, the Tigers will be back in action against the Maryland Terrapins (3-0) as part of the annual ACC / Big Ten Challenge.
