The carbon fiber muscle car is having a moment.
Classic Recreations has just launched a new 1967 Shelby GT500CR Mustang, the first to feature a carbon fiber body. The custom shop, which is responsible for all officially licensed Shelby continuation cars, teamed up with Speedkore to design and manufacture the ultralight body.
The process is nothing but high-tech: the store in the light of blue scanned the steel body of a 1967 GT500CR, passed through CAD and then permanently consecrated it in plugs, which will be used to make future molds. The resulting exterior is made of autoclave cured panels that form a spotless “exact match replication” of a Vintage Shelby GT500 – except that it weighs 600 pounds less.

The lighter body does not cost energy. Under the carbon fiber hood is a third-generation 5.2-liter Ford Coyote engine with a 2.9-liter Whipple supercharger. Coupled to a 10-speed automatic transmission, it is capable of producing 810 horsepower and 600 ft lbs of torque. Other modern features include an adjustable Detroit Speed suspension, JRI Coilover shock absorbers, quadralink rear suspension, high-performance Wilwood brakes, rack and pinion steering and safety bar. The muscle car also runs with three parts wrapped in BFGoodrich Rivals tires.
“This first car in the production series demonstrates our ability to design and manufacture amazing cars in collaboration with key partners like SpeedKore,” said Jason Engel, founder and co-owner of Classic Recreations, in a statement. The carbon fiber Shelby, Engel said, has a power-to-weight ratio “equal to that of most exotic vehicles.”

The agile new GT500CR has a starting price of $ 265,000 and is available with several different transmission options. A limited edition of the Carbon Edition Shelby GT500CR, which features special badges and a Shelby serial number, starts at $ 298,000 and can be upgraded to customer preference. Ordering information is available on the store’s website now.
This is not the first carbon fiber restomod we saw this week. Speedkore also unveiled its 1970 Dodge Charger Hellraiser. The sinister-looking attraction, which was commissioned by comedian Kevin Hart, features a 426 Hemi that offers 1,000 jaw-dropping horses and 950 lbs of twist.
