Classic “problematic” films examined in the new TCM series

Turner Classic Movies decided not to throw the baby out with the bathwater when it comes to timeless but problematic films. The result is “Reframed: Classic Films in the Rearview Mirror”, a new series that starts Thursday and runs throughout the month.

Along with the screening of 18 classics, TCM hosts will discuss what the network calls “troubling and problematic” aspects of the much loved movies, which were released in the 1920s through the 1960s. a rich historical context for each classic, ”said the network in a statement.

Among the problems: racism, sexism, portraits of LGBTQ issues and more.

“We are not saying that this is how you should feel about ‘Psychosis’ or how you should feel about ‘And the Wind Has Gone’. We’re just trying to model ways to have longer and deeper conversations, not just cut to ‘I love this movie. I hate this movie. ‘There is a lot of space between them, ”TCM host Jacqueline Stewart told the Associated Press recently.

Stewart and other presenters Ben Mankiewicz, Dave Karger, Alicia Malone and Eddie Muller will take turns presenting a round table that will address the history and cultural context of the films. They will also prepare new viewers about the times that they may find disturbing.

“Our job is not to get up and say, ‘This is a movie that you should feel guilty about liking,'” Mankiewicz told the Hollywood Reporter. “But to pretend that racism in him is not painful and acute? No. I don’t want to run away from this. This was inevitable. Welcome. And late. “

Below are all the films that will be “Reframed” once a week until the end of this month, starting every Thursday at 5 pm Pacific time. This is a situation in which it is good to be a night owl or to have a DVR, because the films play one after another – and even during the night.
