Clark County reports 8 new COVID-19 deaths as new case count continues to drop

Clark County reported eight new deaths from COVID-19 on Friday, as the average number of new cases dropped to the lowest level since October, according to Clark County Public Health.

Public Health said the deaths included two women in their 60s with underlying illnesses, one man in their 70s with underlying illnesses and three women and two men aged 80 and over, with everyone except one of the men with illnesses basic.

Ten people have died of COVID-19 since February 5, compared with 20 the week before and 16 the week ending January 29. COVID-19 has been responsible for 212 deaths so far, according to Public Health data.

Public Health reported 29 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, bringing the total number of cases to 17,735 so far.

There has been an average of about 48 new cases per day since February 5, compared to about 77 cases per day in the previous week and about 94 cases per day in the week ending January 29. Total cases peaked in the week ending January 8, with an average of about 180 new cases per day.

This week’s new case count was the lowest since the seven days that ended on October 23, when Public Health reported an average of about 43 new cases per day.

The number of active cases fell to 351 on Friday, from 376 on Thursday, showing a continued decline in the number of people still in their isolation period, according to public health data.

Hospitalizations dropped slightly, with 33 people hospitalized with COVID-19, compared with 37 on Thursday, and six hospitalized people awaiting test results, compared with 14 on Thursday.

On Friday, 84.4 percent of licensed ICU beds in Clark County were occupied, up from 85.9 percent on Thursday.
