Chromecast with Google TV gets December security patch

Google’s latest Chromecast is one of the best streaming devices available today, and in the world of Android TV, it’s also one of the best supported. Today, another update is being released for Chromecast with Google TV, and brings the December 2020 security patch with it.

Available now for Chromecast with Google TV, the QTS2.200918.033 update version is a 78.20 MB update. As usual with Chromecast updates, Google hasn’t released an official changelog to detail what’s new. Fortunately, there are some things that we can put together immediately.

First, this update brings Chromecast with Google TV up to the December 2020 security patch, compared to the previous September patch. It is not so uncommon for Android TV devices to be behind on these patches, and even though they are about three patches behind, it still puts the new Chromecast in a better position than most other devices on the platform.

Along with this, some users have noted, anecdotally, that Chromecast with Google TV appears to be working better at 4k60 with some TVs after the December update. The new Chromecast has always supported 4k60, but some TVs didn’t work perfectly well with the functionality, either by not recognizing that Chromecast could support it or requiring some adjustments to the settings to make everything work properly. If you were experiencing these issues, this update could to help.

Finally, there is also another remote Chromecast update included with this update. After installing the main system update, another update for the remote control will be available in Settings.
