Tabbed browsing in Google Chrome is about to become much more convenient.
Scrollable guide bars are something you can already use in Safari and Firefox, so it’s time for Google to implement them themselves. And not only was it added to Chrome, but the best part is that you can activate the feature yourself right now. Make sure you’re using the latest version of the browser, Chrome 88.
If you want to try this feature, navigate to chrome: // flags via your omnibox and search for “Scrollable TabStrip” When you find it, simply select “Enable”.
After enabling the scrollable guides, you can browse the guides with the mouse or trackpad. However, you can also use the left and right arrow buttons, which you will find to the right of the new tab button if you activate another flag called “Tab scroll buttons”.
In addition to allowing you to browse through its long list of guides, Chrome developers are also testing the width of the guides in the latest version of Chrome Canary. You can let the guides shrink the more you open them, as they do now, keep them a small, medium or large fixed width, or not shrink.
We all know how complicated it can be to tell which tab is which if you have multiple windows on the same site open. Therefore, this feature can allow you to read the full title of the pages and, at the same time, have access to all of them easily.
These resizable tabs are only available in Chrome Canary, not as a flag in the stable version of the browser you are probably using. However, if the feature works well, there’s no reason why we won’t see it appear in the stable version any time soon.
