Christmas Eve storm: hundreds still awaiting power in the Philadelphia region

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) – Hundreds are still waiting for power to return to Philadelphia and the surrounding suburbs on Saturday night after a storm on Christmas Eve.

According to PECO’s online outage map, around 1,500 customers have been without power since 9:30 pm on Saturday. The company said 138,000 customers were restored earlier in the day.

Inside the Gallagher / Corcoran family home in Springfield, Pennsylvania, the joy of Christmas is everywhere. But outside, a borrowed generator kept some essential items running – including the Christmas tree lights – so that the family of five could stay home for Christmas.

“Our nanny said, ‘My dad has one, if you want to come and get him,’ and they live in Springfield. That’s how we spent Christmas Day,” said Tammy Gallagher.

The family says the lights went out very early on Christmas morning, making it an unusual holiday on Dunwoody Drive.

“It was fun because it was different, but I didn’t like it when I couldn’t see my gifts,” said Makayla Corcoran, 11.

“There are about nine houses on this side of the street, just total darkness,” said Makayla’s father, Ryan Corcoran. “I’m lucky to be warm now.”

In Broomall, while PECO teams were working at the Windsor Circle, some unheated people installed generators while it was getting dark.

“Around 10:30 am this morning, we lost energy. I was having coffee and the TV went off, ”said Ryan Cook, borrowing a generator from his father. “I’m going to try to connect a generator to my panel, turn on the refrigerator, the freezer, things like that. I don’t have heating.”

Fortunately, power was restored at Windsor Circle just before 7 pm on Saturday. About two miles away, we found teams from Canada working on Evergreen Avenue in Broomall. When the power returned, Claire Mellman ran to thank the workers who restored their energy in the freezing cold.

“I gave them cookies. And they were very sweet and thankful because they came all the way from Quebec. For that, we thank them.”
