Riz Ahmed and Frances McDormand were among the winners of the acting award on Sunday.
The Toronto Film Critics Association named Chloe Zhao’s Nomadland as his best photo of 2020, as the American road movie continued his career as a candidate at the start of the award season.
On Sunday, Zhao received the award for best director for Nomadland, which also earned Frances McDormand the trophy for best actress for her role in the film, while Riz Ahmed won a victory for best actor for his performances in Sound of Metal.
Elsewhere in the acting categories, Daniel Kaluuya was voted best supporting actor for his role as president of Black Panther, Fred Hampton, in Warner Bros. ‘ Judas and the Black Messiah, while Maria Bakalova won the crown for best supporting actress for her performance in Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, next to Sacha Baron Cohen.
Wolfwalkers, the last installment of Tomm Moore’s Irish folklore trilogy aired on AppleTV +, was named by Toronto critics as the best animated film, and Bacurau, the neo-western folk tale by director Kleber Mendonça Filho, elected the best foreign language film.
Other winners include Black Bodies short film director Kelly Fyffe-Marshall as best emerging artist; Alexander Nanau Collective, a film about hospital corruption after a nightclub fire, elected the best documentary of 2020; Radha Blank’s The 40-year-old version, with Lena Waithe as producer, winning in the category of best first feature; and best script for Lee Isaac Chung’s dramatic comedy Minari.
Toronto critics tweeted the winners and runners-up live via their #TFCAawards Twitter account. This year’s pandemic-era vote included cinema and streaming movies scheduled for release on March 31, 2021.
