Dogs are descended from wolves, but the two are not the same – unless, apparently, you are a keeper in central China.
Visitors to the Xiangwushan Zoo in Xianning, Hubei province, China, were confused this week when they found a rottweiler in the wolf enclosure.
A visitor’s video went viral after he filmed the caged animal while saying, “Wow! Are you a wolf? “
The man who filmed the footage told Beijing News (via the BBC) that he was informed by the team that “there was a wolf (once), but that he died of old age”.
Local media reported that zoo officials said the dog would only be there soon, but that the zoo, which also has (real) lions and tigers. now he has been told by the local forestry office to remove the plaque that led to the grounds.
Social media in China has not stopped itself. At Weibo, a commentator said, “At least get a husky (it will look more like a wolf).”
Since then, the zoo has been advised to remove the “wolf” sign. No word on the future of the rottweiler.
