Chinese city reports coronavirus found in ice cream

BEIJING – A prefecture in eastern China says the coronavirus was found in ice cream produced there, which led to a recall of boxes from the same batch.

The government says company employees in Tianjin, adjacent to Beijing, are being tested for coronavirus and the company is isolated.

There is no indication that anyone has contracted the ice cream virus. Most of the 29,000 boxes of ice cream in the batch had not yet been sold.

The government said 390 boxes sold in Tianjin are being tracked and authorities elsewhere have been notified of sales in their areas.

The ice cream contained powdered milk from New Zealand and powdered whey from Ukraine, the government said.

China suggested that the disease, first detected in Wuhan, came from abroad and highlighted what it says are discoveries of the virus in fish and other imported foods. However, foreign scientists are skeptical of this claim.
