Children’s hospital sees increase in MISC cases related to COVID-19

OMAHA, Nebraska (WOWT) – A COVID warning when it comes to young people. Children’s Hospital and Medical Center is seeing the largest number of cases of what is called MISC.

This is the rare and complex syndrome connected to the virus that can inflame the child’s heart and other organs.

As vaccinations continue across the country, young people are at the bottom of the list. Experts believe the recent increase is related to vacation travel and meetings.

For most of the summer, the children had two patients per month with MISC. In December, they were 10.

January will get over it.

Dr. Jean Ballweg, a pediatric cardiologist at Children’s Hospital said: “We know that more than 50% of our pediatric patients have cardiac manifestations of MIS-C and are serious. Some of our children needed to use a heart-lung machine. Many needed to be intubated and intravenous medication to support the heart. We have a follow-up program and we will maintain it for one year after discharge. I suspect that those with heart problems, we will follow indefinitely. “

What is really a problem for child cardiologists is that no one really knows the long-term implications of this syndrome.

They want this to be a reminder to be vigilant in preventing the spread of COVID-19.
