Kansas City Chiefs’ external linebacker coach Britt Reid was involved in a multi-vehicle accident on Thursday night, just three days before the Super Bowl LV against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. According to 41 Action News, the accident happened shortly after 9 pm on Interstate 435 in Kansas City – an exit south of the Chiefs’ training facility at the Truman Sports Complex. Two children were injured in the car accident.

According to Kansas City police, a white Dodge Ram that Reid drove collided with a Chevrolet Impala that had run out of gas and was parked on an exit ramp. The Impala driver had called the family for help before the accident, which arrived in a Chevrolet Traverse parked in front of the disabled vehicle. Reid hit the Impala’s left front, then continued and hit the Traverse’s right rear.

A 5-year-old child in the Traverse’s backseat suffered life-threatening injuries and a 4-year-old – also sitting in the backseat – suffered non-fatal injuries. Both children were taken to a local hospital.

The Chiefs issued the following statement:

“The organization has been informed of an accident involving several vehicles involving Outside Linebackers coach Britt Reid. We are in the process of collecting information and will have no further comments at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved.”

Police said investigators were trying to determine whether the driver’s disability was a factor in the accident, which closed three of the interstate’s four lanes. According to a search warrant, Reid told an officer that he drank two to three drinks. Reid complained of stomach pains and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Reid, the son of Chiefs ‘head coach Andy Reid, has been on the Chiefs’ technical team since his father was hired by the franchise in 2013. He was a graduate assistant at Temple University before being hired by in 2013 and a field intern. training on Reid’s team with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2009.

Reid pleaded guilty in 2007 to drug and drug possession charges stemming from a traffic dispute, which included unlicensed possession of a firearm. He was sentenced to eight to 23 months in prison. He also pleaded guilty to DUI and drug charges in a separate incident later that year.
