Chiefs sign ex-Browns WR Antonio Callaway

Talented but mercurial recipient, Antonio Callaway found a new home.

Callaway, a fourth-round pick from the Cleveland Browns draft in 2018, signed a futures reserve agreement with the Kansas City Chiefs, a source told Yahoo Sports.

Callaway, 24, fell into the draft after a tumultuous college career in Florida, but the Browns bet on their ability to keep the 5-foot-11 and 200 pound wideout in the way so they could cultivate their game-breaking potential. He showed flashes as a rookie, picking up 43 passes for 586 yards and five touchdowns, but was suspended twice in 2019 for violating the league’s substance abuse policy and was released by Cleveland in November 2019.

Callaway signed with the Miami Dolphins training team in September, while serving suspension for his previous problems. The club released him in late December after he managed two passes for 20 yards in five games.

Only players who are not on the active roster of an NFL team at the conclusion of the regular season are eligible for these contracts, which essentially allows the player to test during the off-season. The team also signed a future reserve contract on Tuesday with former Washington State quarterback Anthony Gordon.

The Chiefs face the Browns on Sunday in the AFC divisional round.
