Chiefs’ assistant admits he drank before the I-435 accident and injured 2 children, 1 seriously

KANSAS CITY, Missouri – Chiefs assistant linebacker coach Britt Reid was involved in a multi-vehicle accident that injured two children less than two days before the team left for the Super Bowl LV in Tampa, Florida.

Reid, 35, the son of Chiefs’ head coach Andy Reid, has been on the team’s coaching staff since his father arrived before the 2013 season.

The Chiefs confirmed on Friday in a statement to 41 Action News that Reid was involved in an accident on Thursday night.

“The organization was informed of an accident involving several vehicles involving Outside Linebackers coach Britt Reid. We are in the process of collecting information and will have no further comments at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved. “

The accident happened shortly after 9 pm on Thursday on Interstate 435 heading south, near Eastwood Trafficway, which is an exit south of the Chiefs’ training facilities at the Truman Sports Complex.

According to Kansas City, Missouri police, a Chevrolet Impala that had run out of gas was parked on the driveway from Stadium Drive to I-435.

The driver asked the family for help, who arrived in a Chevrolet Traverse and parked in front of the disabled car.

While trying to get the vehicle running again, a white Dodge Ram Laramie Sport truck traveling down the driveway – which Britt Reid admitted to the police that he was driving, according to a search warrant – hit the stranded Impala’s left front.

The driver of the stranded vehicle was in the car at the time and was unhurt, but the Ram truck continued forward and also hit the Traverse’s right rear.

A 5-year-old child in the Traverse’s backseat suffered life-threatening injuries and a 4-year-old, also in the backseat, suffered non-life-threatening injuries, according to KCPD.

Both children were transported to a local hospital for treatment.

An adult passenger in the Traverse’s front seat was not injured in the accident. Reid received non-life-threatening injuries, investigators said.

The KCPD said investigators are trying to determine whether the driver’s disability was a factor in the accident, which closed three of the interstate’s four lanes.

According to a search warrant presented just before midnight on Thursday, a KCPD official said they could smell “a mild odor of alcoholic beverages” and that Britt Reid’s eyes were red and bloodshot.

Britt Reid told the officer that he drank two to three drinks, according to the search warrant request. He also said he took Adderall by prescription.

The officer wrote in the warrant that he observed signs of disability, after which Reid complained of stomach pain and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Once at the hospital, the officer requested a blood collection from Britt Reid and a Jackson County judge approved the request. The search warrant request also references that “a computer scan revealed … several previous DUI contacts.”

Police also closed the I-70 ramps to the south of I-435, along with other interstate entry ramps in the area to investigate and clear the debris.

The Chiefs are scheduled to leave on Saturday for Tampa, where Kansas City will face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Super Bowl LV at Raymond James Stadium.

Britt Reid should not travel with the team, according to a report by Jason La Canfora.

Britt Reid, a graduate of Temple University, served as an intern at the Philadelphia Eagles training camp on Andy’s team in 2009. He spent the next two years as a graduate assistant in his alma mater before joining the Chiefs team in 2013.

Britt Reid spent his first two seasons in Kansas City as a defensive quality control technician. He was promoted to assistant coach of the defensive line in 2015.

During 2016-18, Britt Reid served as the Chiefs’ defensive line coach before switching to the external linebacker coach for the past two seasons.

Britt Reid was arrested on January 30, 2007, for pointing a gun at another driver during a reported road violence incident in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.

It pleaded guilty later that year possession of an unlicensed firearm, a crime and other crimes, receiving a prison sentence of eight to 23 months plus five years of probation.
