Chief Scientific Adviser to Operation Warp Speed, a US government initiative to facilitate and accelerate the development, manufacture and distribution of COVID-19 countermeasures, said that the Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccine is causing more allergic reactions than expected .
Dr. Moncef Slaoui said he was updated on six cases of allergic reactions to the vaccine on Tuesday and said the frequency “is higher than would be expected with other vaccines.” He also pointed out that the data on COVID-19 immunizations falls short of the actual figures.
According to Dr. Slaoui, vaccine manufacturers and the National Institutes of Health are involved in discussions to consider conducting clinical trials in very allergic populations. He said the study may help to understand the rate of allergic reactions and what is causing them.
Recently, the FDA Center for Biological Research and Evaluation held a meeting to discuss emergency use authorization for the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, including a trial where four cases of Bell’s palsy were reported among the vaccinated group and none among the placebo group. After examining the findings, the FDA declared that there was “no clear basis for concluding a causal relationship” between the vaccine and the occurrence of Bell’s palsy.
