Chicago shooting: Jason Nightengale shoots 7 victims, killing 5 in a crime wave between Chicago and Evanston, ending with police shooting

CHICAGO (WLS) – Seven people were shot and at least five of the victims were killed after a shooting that spread from Chicago to Evanston on Saturday, according to Chicago police.

Chicago police identified the suspect as Jason Nightengale, 32. Nightengale also died after a police shootout, officials said.

Cook County Court records obtained by I-Team on Sunday reveal a long series of arrests and prosecutions since 2005 for firearms and drug violations, criminal invasion, theft, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, reckless conduct and domestic violence.

He lived in N. Artesian at the time of his first arrest, 16 years ago, investigators said.

The most recent case against the man in Cook County, before Saturday’s shooting, was a domestic battery unveiled in October 2019.

There was a Court Protection Order applied to Nightengale that he violated, according to the records.

The protection order appears to have expired last summer. The victim – or relationship – in the domestic case is not known.

Before the wave of crime between metropolises, which lasted for hours, on Saturday, Nightengale posted dragged and confused videos on social networks, according to law sources.

“He started to enter the building and I think she said he had to leave the building and then he shot her. Then she started running and he shot again,” said a neighbor who declined to be identified.

A 77-year-old woman who was inside the building retrieving correspondence was also shot, CPD said.

A woman, who was hit in the chest, was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead, police said. The other woman was taken to the same hospital in critical condition.

Neighbors said the dead woman was the complex’s former gatekeeper.

“She was a good person. As far as I know, she has two children, ”said the neighbor.

Nightengale then aimed a gun at a man, who the police said he knew, and shoved him into an apartment on 5,000 block of S. East End Avenue around 2:45 pm and demanded the victim’s vehicle keys. He then headed to a nearby parking lot to locate the victim’s red Toyota and took off.

About an hour later, Chicago police said Nightengale entered a retail store on block 9300 on South Halsted Street. He announced an assault before firing, hitting a 20-year-old man in the head. The victim was transported to Christ Hospital, where he later died. An 81-year-old victim inside the company was also shot in the back and neck. She was transported to the same hospital in critical condition, said the CPD.

Police said Nightengale then fled the scene and, at approximately 5 pm, fired from an unknown location, hitting a 15-year-old girl in the head while she was driving in the back seat of a car her mother was driving on block 10300 south Halsted Street . The teenager is in critical condition at Hospital Infantil Comer, according to the CPD. His mother was not hurt.

Shortly thereafter, police said that Nightengale returned to the robbery site on Block 9300 of S. Halsted, where he then fired on a Chicago police vehicle.

“We are responding to the scene as the crimes are happening, obtaining information, and again, he is going to the next one as we try to keep up with what happened earlier,” said Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown. all together, he’s here in Evanston. “

Evanston Police said they responded to a call about an armed man at an Evanston CVS store near Asbury and Howard around 5:40 pm. When they arrived, the suspect ran to an IHOP, where he shot a woman who had allegedly taken hostage, according to Evanston police chief Demitrous Cook.

“While I was parked here by IHOP, there was a body shot here on the floor. A woman probably in her 40s, bleeding,” said witness Israel Lopez.

Nightengale then led the police in an eastward chase in Howard, where they exchanged fire near a Dollar General parking lot and Nightengale was fatally wounded by Evanston police, officials said.

“There was an exchange of fire. I’m not sure who shot first, but it was in response to the violence that he perpetrated in our city,” said Cook.

The woman taken hostage was shot in the head and has died, CPD said.

Evanston investigators are collaborating with the Chicago police to uncover the crime wave of Nightengale, which started on the South Side of Chicago and ended in Evanston.
