A Chicago police sergeant left the hospital on Sunday night after being shot while in the parking lot of the Gresham district police station on the South Side, officials said.
At 2:33 pm, the sergeant on duty was on the south lot of the 6th District / Gresham station, 7808 S. Halsted St., when he heard gunshots and felt pain after suffering a scrape wound to his chin, police said.
Just over 10 minutes later, the 45-year-old man was spotted and rushed to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in good condition, Chicago firefighters and police said.
Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown visited the sergeant at the hospital on Sunday afternoon, noting in a tweet that the injured policeman is “recovering in a good mood”. During a brief press conference at the hospital, Brown shortly described the sergeant’s wound as a “superficial wound”. He was released on Sunday night, a police spokesman said.
On Thursday, police said no one was in custody in connection with the shooting. And Brown told reporters that the investigation led by Area Two detectives was still “very preliminary”.
“At the moment, we are analyzing our video, both on the station and on the POD camera, as well as on any [closed circuit television] private video that is coming for more evidence, ”said Brown.
One of ours was shot in the @ ChicagoCAPS06 police district parking earlier today, when a Chicago Police sergeant suffered a scrape wound in the chin area and was transported to a local hospital in good condition. @ Area2Detectives are investigating, no offender in custody.

Brown said the sergeant is the first officer to be shot this year, although he added that another 12 have already been shot. Brown noted that it exceeds the numbers recorded last year, when 79 policemen were shot and 10 of them were hit.
“It just highlights the dangers of policing in the current environment that we are in,” said Brown during the press conference.
The sergeant’s identity was not released, but police said he is a 26-year-old veteran in the department assigned to the district of Gresham. Police said he received 127 department awards, including 13 compliments, nine letters of courtesy and 73 honorable mentions.
