Chicago Bears targets QB Mac Jones in new mock draft

The Chicago Bears are a team full of needs in various positions in the roster, which makes next month’s draft for the NFL incredibly important for a team that is said to be in the “win now” mode.

The quarterback remains the biggest concern for the Bears after a few weeks of flirting with the prospect of switching to Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson. After offering three choices in the first round, one choice in the third round and two players, Seattle told Chicago that he is not switching Wilson right now.

Even after the Bears lost in Wilson’s draw, they still manage to find their (potential) quarterback in the franchise without having to negotiate to move up the draft in a new mock draft.

In the new mock draft of Touchdown Wire, Doug Farrar has Chicago cast Alabama quarterback Mac Jones as the 20th overall choice.

If you’re wondering how Jones can drop to 20th in a draft where there are desperate teams in the quarterback position, Farrar has what you need.

Why would it drop to 20? Because the modern NFL requires defenders to demonstrate mobility and a secondary reaction capacity, and Jones has not shown much of it. But he is a big pocket mover (the combination of responsibility and assets is why so many people make fun of him for the Patriots), and maybe he can develop into an average mover with boots and shuffling exercises. As of Day 1, however, it is an improvement over what the Bears are achieving in the position.

But the Bears are not betting on Jones falling for them in 20th position, and it doesn’t look like they are going to negotiate to grab one of the top five defenders.

That’s why they’re supposed to be doing a lot of homework in the Day 2 quarterbacks, including Kyle Trask of Florida, Kellen Mond of Texas A&M, Jamie Newman of Georgia and Ian Book of Notre Dame.

Then again, the belief is that Jones – or the other four best defenders – will be gone long before Chicago reaches 20th place. But if Jones fell to the Bears in the first round, it would be difficult to imagine GM Ryan Pace passing him.
