Chevy Bolt sales increase 53.7%

The Chevy Bolt is not the most exciting or extravagant electric car on the market – it is not a Tesla or Ford Mustang Mach-E. However, it is the electric vehicle that I see most often on the roads around me, in addition to all Tesla models. It is exciting and uplifting to see them, even though the car has never tingled at the back of my neck.

One thing that Bolt has in common with Mach-E is that, love it or not, its sales are very poor. This is not going to change, because it is a class of vehicles that is not very popular in America. However, the good news is that things are looking up for the little Bolt EV.

In the first quarter of 2021, sales of the Chevy Bolt EV increased by 53.7% over sales in the first quarter of 2020. In fact, it was the best first quarter of the Bolt EV in history. (Admittedly, it’s not a very long story, but the Bolt EV was the first long-range, semi-affordable electric car in the U.S. market.)

The Bolt EV had 9,025 sales in the United States in the last quarter, up from 5,873 sales in the first quarter of 2020. That is the good news. The bad news is that the Bolt EV had only 9,025 sales in the US in the last quarter. Multiply that by 4 and you won’t even reach 40,000 sales a year. Damn, you don’t even reach 37,000 sales a year.

You will not cut enough emissions, GM, with less than 40,000 sales of electric vehicles per year in the 2020s. Tesla probably had more than 22,000 sales of Model 3 in the first quarter in the U.S. and more than 43,000 sales of Model Y in the first quarter. quarter here. GM needs to understand why its EV of a similar age does so much worse and how the company could approach Tesla’s numbers. The electrical revolution will not slow down, and a model with annual sales below 100,000 – let alone 40,000 – will not be seen as a leader for long.
