Cher apologized to his Twitter followers after stirring controversy over a recent tweet about George Floyd in the midst of a trial for his murder.
The singer accessed Twitter after a recent tweet in which she discussed the ongoing trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who is accused of murdering Floyd when he knelt on his neck during an arrest in May 2020. The video of The incident went viral and generated national recognition with race around the world, mainly in the United States.
“I was talking to mom and she said, ‘I watched the policeman’s trial that killed George Floyd, and he cried,'” Cher wrote in a deleted tweet. “I said, ‘Mom, I know this is going to sound crazy, but … I kept thinking … maybe if I had been there … I could have helped.’
The tweet generated an immediate debate with many sympathizing with the singer’s position, while others ridiculed her for acting like a “white savior” for feeling that she could have helped the situation with her perseverance.

As the reaction grew, the star addressed the controversy in a follow-up tweet, noting that she resented people saying she could not have a sincere and emotional opinion about the trial.

“I struggled with this Twt, because I thought that some people would not understand, or believe that an Artist could have honest emotions about a human being, suffering and dying, even if it is shown only on TV. You do not know what I have done, who I am or what I believe in. I CAN, I HAVE and I WILL … HELP, ” she wrote.

Hours later, however, the star returned to Twitter to issue an unequivocal apology to anyone she upset in the black community with her words. She said the apology came after talking to a friend about the matter.
“I just hung up the phone with friend Karen. I told her what happened and realized, you can piss people off and hurt them for not knowing everything” NOT appropriate “to say. I know people are sorry when they’re in a jam, BUT FOR GOD🙏🏼, EVEN IF I disturb someone in the Blk community.I Know My❤️, ” she wrote.

Cher appears to have followed the trial closely and tweeted her thoughts about him over the past week. In a tweet of March 31, 2021, the star praised witnesses who testified about what they saw during the more than 9 minutes that Chauvin knelt on Floyd’s neck.

“Feel so incredibly sad for the brave people who have defended themselves to testify and report the assassination of George Floyd for all to see,” she wrote Wednesday. “These were Americans who didn’t / couldn’t get away from another human being having their last breath … crushed out of their body.”
