Charleston County school district officials concerned about resuming face-to-face learning

We would like to express our extreme concern about the return of face-to-face learning within our building on Monday, January 4, 2021. As alarming data on COVID positivity rates and statistics was released by DHEC in the past two weeks, we expected that CCSD leaders must use this information to make decisions that ensure the safety of everyone at our school. According to COVID tax data in our area, choosing virtual learning over face-to-face learning would be prudent at this point. The number of positive cases in the state made us very uneasy and uncomfortable. There have been 1,865 positive cases in Charleston County since December 17, 2020. As of December 31, the positive percentage rate was 31.2% in South Carolina. Many districts, including several around us, decided to go virtual and make mistakes for being too careful to keep their teachers, staff and students safe. It is extremely worrying that the Charleston County School District has made a decision that does not seem to be in the best interest of the health and safety of our teachers, staff, students or their families.
