There are many questions about Nintendo’s upcoming Super Mario movie and Illumination, but one of the biggest concerns is who will give Mario a voice. Truth be told, we don’t even know if Mario will be dubbed or not! You would imagine that Mario will have some kind of speech in the film, since he intervenes from time to time in the games.
While we wait to learn more about the voice cast for the film, it appears that the voice of Mario that we all know and love may not be involved with the project. In an interview with GalaxyCon Live with none other than Charles Martinet, he asked what he thinks of the next film. A part of Charles’s answer is as follows.
“… if you invite me to play, I will come and play with a lot of joy and happiness.”
Well, that could be understood in two different ways. The most obvious way is that Martinet was simply not asked to give a voice to the role. The second way of looking at this leads us to consider Charles’s comments as a timid attitude. It is likely that Charles was unable to confirm / deny his work on the film, so the careful wording of the statement above could get around the issue.
There is no doubt that fans will be upset if Martinet is not giving Mario a voice in the film, but big name films tend to follow the power of Hollywood stars to boost their projects. We’ll just have to wait and see what direction Nintendo and Illumination are going.
