Actor Chadwick Boseman made history, becoming the first actor to be nominated for four SAG awards in a year in the film categories. He is competing for prizes for: Excellent performance of a male actor in a leading role (Black Bottom by Ma Rainey), Excellent performance of a male actor in a supporting role (Da 5 Bloods), Exceptional performance of a cast in a film (Da 5 Bloods and Black Bottom by Ma Rainey)
The nominations were announced on February 4. Boseman died of colon cancer at age 43 in August 2020.
Da 5 Bloods it is set during the Vietnam War and was co-written, produced and directed by Spike Lee. It co-stars with Delroy Lindo and Jonathan Majors and tells the story of 5 Black soldiers who discover where a CIA plane crashed, grab the bars of gold that were stored in it and bury them for later retrieval. But after the landmarks they used to identify the location of the gold are destroyed, they must wait for another opportunity to obtain their forbidden treasure. The film is available exclusively via Netflix and was the last released during the life of Chadwick Boseman.
Boseman’s final film, Black Bottom by Ma Rainey, focuses on a day in the life of the blues legend of the 1920s, Ma Rainey. Although she has been very successful in her career, the singer still needs to overcome racism and misogyny, proving that rising to the top still presents intense struggles for black women. Boseman starred as Levee Green, a trumpeter with big dreams – and an even bigger ego that ultimately overwhelms him. The film was also a Netflix original and was based on a 1982 play written by August Wilson. It was produced in part by Denzel Washington.
The late actor was also nominated for a Golden Globe (Best Performance by an Actor in a Drama) for his portrayal of Levee in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, as well as 2 NAACP Image Awards (Best Actor in a Film, Best Supporting Actor in a movie) to Da 5 Bloods and Black Bottom by Ma Rainey.
