CES 2021 will be a virtual event this year, as the latest technology innovations seek attention, while dealing with the coronavirus pandemic that is hitting the world.
“Masks of all kinds, mature voice assistants, 5G will power everything, plus 8K TV sets, [and] robots … for more practical purposes, “Greg Kahn, CEO of GK Digital Ventures and the Internet of Things Consortium, told Fox News.
Fox News has compiled a list of some of the technologies that may be in the spotlight as of Jan. 11.
RANSOMWARE IS LIKELY TO BE WORST IN 2021: REPORT
8K AND MINI-LED TVS
At about 33 million pixels – four times more than ordinary 4K – expensive 8K TVs are still out of reach for most consumers. This fact will not prevent manufacturers like Samsung and LG from promoting this at CES.
Mini-LED screen technology, which offers better brightness, color and contrast compared to current LCD TVs, will also be a theme. LG will show its own mini-LED version with something called QNED.
Samsung is also expected to unveil new Micro LED TVs.
5G FOR REAL
The fast cellular network was a success at CES in 2020, but it was not widely available at the time. Expect more this year, as the latest phones, like the new iPhone 12, are equipped with 5G now.
Verizon CEO Hans Vestberg will deliver a live talk on January 11th with 5G as the theme.
The promise of 5G is future devices, like smart glasses with augmented reality. Major operators are also starting to offer home 5G Internet.

MASKS, AIR FILTERING
Masks are now a fashion trend, but with a very practical purpose in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.
High-tech masks with proprietary antibacterial, antiviral, filtration and breathability technologies are expected to be unveiled at CES, as well as smart air purifiers and UV disinfection lamps, according to media reports.
LG announced its PuriCare Wearable Air Purifier this summer. It is equipped with HEPA filters and includes a respiratory sensor that detects the user’s breathing cycle and volume to adjust the speed of the built-in fans.
INTERNET OF THINGS AND HEALTH MONITORING
Consumers should also expect a variety of health monitoring devices and applications.
Wearable devices and apps that allow more independence for the elderly are also likely, said Kahn of GK Digital Ventures. “Several pill bottles, for example, are now enabled for the Internet and contain sensors that send data to the cloud regarding the time to open the lid, close and remove the medication to avoid errors.”
OTHER TECHNOLOGIES, INCLUDING ROBOTS AND VOICE-ENABLED DEVICES
Another technology to be observed is the increasingly practical robots. And smarter voice assistants offered on more products, like Amazon Echo Loop Ring and Amazon Frames, as well as voice-enabled door locks.
In addition, electric cars and autonomous driving technology have been featured at CES in recent years. This year, GM is expected to have a lot to say about its future electric vehicles, with CEO Mary Barra as a speaker on Jan. 12.
