CenterPoint is alerting its customers to an incorrect email circulating claiming they owe thousands of dollars in their accounts.

ABC13 contacted CenterPoint about the situation. CenterPoint initially responded that they were investigating the situation.

They added: “Customers do not owe that amount. We will update our customers and the media as soon as we have a resolution.”

Just two hours later, a company spokesman told ABC13 that emails were sent in error “due to a recent technical problem caused by the power outage in the Houston area”.

They promised to update customers in the late afternoon.

Earlier in the week, Houston police alerted residents to people who pretended to be CenterPoint Energy workers to enter customers’ homes.
